Coup supporters seeking to send tanks into Istanbul streets

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Though the Turkish government has crushed a coup attempt against President Tayyip Erdogan, a number of coup supporters remaining at a military base in Istanbul are still said to be attempting to take tanks out of the garrison and drive them into the streets.

A group of army members linked with Friday's coup bid in Turkey are still holding position in Kartaltepe military base in Istanbul, trying to send tanks to the streets of Turkeys largest city.

It is not still clear what the purpose of the coup supporters is or what reaction the security forces stationed around the base will take if the tanks come out.

More than 290 people were killed and around 1,400 wounded in the violence on Friday night in Turkey, as soldiers commandeered tanks, attack helicopters and fighter jets in a bid to seize power, strafing parliament and the intelligence headquarters and trying to seize the main airport and bridges in Istanbul.

Turkey suspended thousands of police officers on Monday, widening a purge of the armed forces and judiciary after the failed military coup.

A senior security official has told Reuters that 8,000 police officers, including in the capital Ankara and the biggest city Istanbul, had been removed from their posts on suspicion of links to the coup launched by a faction in the army.
