Iran officials strongly condemn Turkey’s coup attempt

July 16, The Iran Project – Iranian officials have strongly condemned an attempted coup in Turkey early Saturday, explaining that the move was contrary to democracy and Turkey's national interests.

Denouncing the coup attempt by Turkish military against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday, a member of Iran’s Parliament board of directors, Seyed Amir Hussein Ghazizadeh Hashemi called the move contrary to national interests.

Ghazizadeh Hashemi pointed out that military coups which have no popular support will fail in a short term.

Seyyed Hossein Naghavi Hosseini, Spokesman for the Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Committee also condemned the recent coup in Turkey, stressing that Islamic Republic of Iran strongly rebukes any kind of coup, terrorist acts and interference in the affairs of other countries.

Turkey is strategically important in terms of broad economic, political, social and cultural rights with Iran, so we are really concerned with any change in the country, Naghavi Hosseini said.

Meanwhile, Iran’s foreign minister, Mohammad Javad Zarif, expressed deep concerns over the coup attempt in Turkey, saying in a twitter post "Turkish people's brave defense of democracy & their elected government proves that coups have no place in our region and are doomed to fail."

Also on Saturday, Secretary of Iran's National Security Council, Ali Shamkhani, said that "We are cognizant about the current situation in Turkey, and we consider instability in Turkey as the instability of our own country."

Elsewhere in his remarks, Shamkhani stated that Iran fully supports the legitimate government of Turkey and opposes any action that disrupts stability, security and peace in this country.

The political deputy of Iran’s Presidential Office Hamid Abutalebi also in a post on his Twitter account  voiced Tehran’s support for the Turkish nation in its struggle to crush an armed coup.

The attempted coup in Turkey was faltering on Saturday, hours after a faction of the military used tanks and helicopters in an ill-fated attempt to end the rule of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Prime Minister Binali Yildirim.

Reportedly, a total of 194 people died during the clashes with more than 1,500 military personnel arrested by Turkish authorities.
