Indias Essar ups Iran oil imports by 50%

Trading figures show Indias Essar Oil, the countrys top buyer of Iranian crude, imported 49.7 percent more Iranian oil in May compared with a year ago.

Reuters has quoted tanker arrival data obtained from trade sources and ship-tracking services as showing that Essar shipped in about 187,300 barrels per day (bpd) of oil from Iran last month, an increase of about 4.6 percent from April.

Essar's oil imports from Iran averaged at about 149,500 bpd in the first five months of 2016 compared with 76,000 bpd of a year ago, Reuters added.

Iran's share in overall imports by Essar Oil in the January-May period rose to 41 percent from about 23 percent in the year-ago period.

Iran announced in April that it is ready to increase its oil exports to India from the current volume of 350,000 barrels per day (bpd) now that the sanctions that had previously hampered Iranian oil export plans have been lifted.

We hope that Indias imports of oil from Iran will increase now that the sanctions have been removed, Irans Petroleum Minister Bijan Zanganeh told his visiting Indian counterpart Dharmendra Pradhan in Tehran.

The media in early June reported a rapid surge in Irans oil export figures after the removal of the sanctions in January.

Reuters quoted traders on 6 June as saying that Irans oil exports are now close to pre-sanction levels of around 2.5 million barrels per day (bpd).

Iran's oil exports were between 2.1 and 2.3 million bpd in April and May, up from 1.3 million bpd a year ago, when Iran was shut out of the European market and dependent on limited shipments to Asian buyers, Reuters added.

Asia is the main destination for crude shipped by foreign vessels, with India, China and Japan the biggest takers.

India, in particular, is taking a lead role as its demand soars and refiners such as Essar Oil, Reliance Energy, Hindustan Petroleum Corp, and Bharat Petroleum Corp enjoy good ties with Iran.
