Russia's LUKoil plans to resume Iranian oil refining at Sicily plant

Russian oil giant LUKoil intends to continue refining Iranian oil at the Italian island of Sicily, the company's president said.





PERM (Sputnik) Russian oil giant LUKoil plans toresume refining ofIranian oil atthe company's ISAB refinery located atthe Italian island ofSicily toreplace Russian Urals brand oil, President ofLUKoil Vagit Alekperov said Thursday.
"Today, we want toreturn it [Iran's oil] there [to the ISAB], because atthe moment Urals is more expensive thanIranian oil. Today, we are placing it atother refineries very effectively," Alekperov told reporters.


He added that oil fromIran was the best option forthe ISAB, because it was designed for70 percent ofheavy oil fromIran and 30 percent oflight oil fromLibya.

Iran began stepping upinternational trade and investment cooperation afterreaching a historic deal onits nuclear program toensure its peaceful nature inexchange forthe suspension ofinternational anti-Iran sanctions, inparticular onits oil sector, inJuly 2015.

In April, Iran signed a deal withEuropean refineries that could allow forthe country to sell upto 700,000 barrels ofoil per day toEurope. The deal was set tobe implemented "within the next few months," according tocountry's Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh.
