Undocumented Afghan refugees in Iran to be granted travel document

Tehran, June 9, The Iran Project Afghanistan's President Ashraf Ghani announces that undocumented Afghan refugees living in Iran will be granted travel documents after Tehran-Kabul agreement.

Granting travel documents to undocumented Afghan refugees living in the Islamic Republic of Iran has been predicted in the draft of the MoU that is going to be signed between Tehran and Kabul, press office of Afghanistans Second Vice president said in a statement on Thursday.

Travel document is a passport substitute and according to the 1951 Geneva Convention, and on the basis of this document, the refugees are allowed to enter and leave the country in a limited time.

According to Afghanistan Registration Act and based on the forms Afghan Register Office distributes to the agencies outside of the country, it has been decided that the identity of those applying for travel documents to be registered, press office also said.

It is worth mentioning that more than three million Afghan refugees are now living in Iran, most of them are undocumented.

The UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) recently expressed gratitude for Iran for its supportive efforts regarding the Afghan refugees in the country despite little financial assistance provided by the international community, while UN chiefBan Ki-moon expressed concern over European countries increasingly-restrictive immigration and refugee policies, saying such policies negatively affect the obligation of member states under international humanitarian law and European law.

Managing director of Irans sister cities development Alireza Rajaee also said previously that Iran serves immigrants unconditionally.

Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei also ordered earlier that Afghan children, even undocumented or illegal ones, should not be deprived of education and all of them must be enrolled in Iranian schools.
