Hezbollah decries Bahraini cleric’s jail sentence extension

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - The Lebanese resistance movement, Hezbollah, condemned the Bahraini regime’s decision to extend a four-year sentence against prominent Shia cleric Sheikh Ali Salman.

In a statement on Tuesday, Hezbollah lashed out at the Manama regime for its continued policy of crackdown on clerics and scholars that have always emphasized on peaceful ways to restore their rights and stand against tyranny.

Hezbollah then hailed Sheikh Salman for pursuing peaceful manners for resolving crisis in Bahrain.

The statement also called on the international organizations and the world’s whole freedom-seekers to raise their voice in opposition to the new court ruling against Sheikh Salman and urge his release.

Sheikh Salman, secretary general of Bahrain’s main opposition party al-Wefaq was initially given a four-year sentence on June 16, 2015 for “inciting hatred”. The Amnesty International had described the trial as "unfair."

His appeal had been pending for eight months but the Supreme Court of Appeal increased Salman’s prison sentence on charges of inciting violence to nine years.

Since 2011, the Manama regime has been cracking down on political dissents.
