US's main objective in Middle East is to regain hegemony, not fight terror

Unfortunately, Washington's main objective in Syria isn't fighting terrorism, helping refugees or easing Syrians' suffering; it's about regime change and the restoration of US dominance in the region. That's according to ANSWER Coalition coordinator Richard Becker.

Speaking toIran's Press TV onFriday, Becker suggested that unfortunately, that the prospects forpeace finally coming tothe war-torn country are low.

Asked byhis interviewer why the US has rejected cooperation withRussia inthe war againstthe terrorists inSyria, Becker argued that it has todo withUS grand strategy.
"They could certainly cooperate if they wanted to; they can do a lot more if they wanted to, butthat's not really the priority. The United States government does not likethe Islamic State or the Al-Nusra Front, buttheir priority is not infighting them. Their priority still remains bringing abouta new government inSyria regime change. [This] has been the US objective now forfive years."

At the same time, Becker noted that "the United States government is ina very hostile mode atthis point towardRussia. The taking ofMontenegro, a tiny country of600,000 people intoNATO last week prompted comments bya high-ranking Russian officer, who said that they would take inthe North Pole if it would contribute toencircling Russia. It's very clear that a top priority forthe United States is moving inthis militarily aggressive way [using] the NATO alliance againstRussia."

Asked tocomment onUN Syria Envoy Staffan de Mistura's remarks aboutthe need forcloser coordination and cooperation betweenRussia and the US, and whether the envoy was aware ofthe conflicting viewpoints ofthe two countries, Becker suggested that this was a case of "the wish taking precedent overreality."
"This is what he would hope forgiven what his task is The reality is that we very often we see United Nations spokespersons or appointed heads ofparticular missions being extremely frustrated bythe fact there isn't really a basis forcommon action bythe US and Russia because ofwhat I mentioned earlier that US priorities are really something other thandefeating these extreme-right wing terrorist groups inSyria."

Ultimately, Becker suggested that "unfortunately forthe people ofSyria, the prospects fora real agreement do not look bright. What's happened toSyria is one ofthe great tragedies ofmodern times, alongwith what's happened toIraq, and what's happened toYemen and what's happened toLibya, and all these places where Western intervention [essentially] has torn these countries apart."

"This is a truly, truly tragic situation that exists, butit doesn't have any impact onwhat Washington's foreign policy is. They pretend tobe concerned aboutthe refugees, aboutthe suffering, butreally they're trying tomaintain, or torestore a position ofdominance inthe Middle East."
