SCO to consider Iran's accession after India, Pakistan

Chinese Foreign Minister said that Irans accession to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) can be put on the organizations agenda once India and Pakistan work through the mechanism of accession.

TASHKENT (Sputnik) Irans accession tothe Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) can be put onthe organizations agenda once India and Pakistan work throughthe mechanism ofaccession, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Tuesday.
"We fully endorse Iran's interest inthis issue [of joining the SCO]. At the moment, we should focus onthe issue ofthe accession ofIndia and Pakistan. At the moment, we need toaccumulate a significant experience and create such a base. I think, inthis respect, the accession ofIran may be put onthe agenda ofthe SCO inthe future," the minister said atthe SCO Council ofForeign Ministers held inthe Uzbek capital ofTashkent.


Iran has asked tojoin SCO several times, the minister added.

The SCO is a political, economic and military alliance comprising Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. The decision tocommence the process ofinclusion ofIndia and Pakistan asmember states inthe organization was made duringthe July SCO summit inthe Russian city ofUfa last year.
