Iran eyes nanotechnology as means to ditch resource-based economy

Over the last decade, Iran has managed to achieve significant breakthroughs in the development of nanotechnologies and in the commercialization and manufacturing of nano products.

Professor Ali Beitollahi ofthe Iran University ofScience and Technology and high-ranking member ofthe Iran Nanotechnology Initiative Council, told Sputnik that these achievements were made possible bystrict adherence tothe 10-Year Plan ofPractical Implementation ofNanotechnologies (2005-2015).

"There are currently over28,000 specialists working inthis field, alongwith about2,600 researchers in100 universities ofour country. Over 13,000 graduates and postgraduates whom we supported intheir scientific endeavors have successfully defended their theses related tothe subject. There are over120 industrial enterprises working inthe high-tech sector. And Im proud toannounce that over320 nano products were successfully commercialized and are now available onthe market," professor said.

Beitollahi pointed outthat back when the 10-Year Plan was adopted in2005, the Iranian scientists were basically starting fromscratch and often consulted their Russian colleagues tolearn more aboutnanotechnology.

"We now have a whole network ofnanolaboratories, comprising 70 facilities all acrossthe country. These labs cooperate witheach other and provide service support toother scientists and university researchers. Considering how important security is when nanotechnologies are concerned, a network called NanoSafety was also established inIran. The Health Ministry now also has a Committee onNanotechnology Development, dubbed Nano FDA, tasked withcreating protocols regarding the safety ofnano products As forstandardization, weve already developed 40 state nanotechnology standards and registered three international standards withthe ISO/TC229 Committee, withthree more standards awaiting approval," he said.

Meanwhile, he added, a second ten-year plan has already been drafted which focuses onthe manufacturing and commercialization ofnano products.

"As you know, Iran has an oil-based economy, and now that the oil prices have sagged considerably, this dependence became painfully obvious. In any case, sooner or later Irans oil reserves will run out, so inorder tocreate an alternative economic model forour country this second ten-year plan focuses ondeveloping information, bio- and nanotechnologies aschief vectors ofthe Iranian economy," Beitollahi explained.

He also said that considering the good neighborly relations that Russia and Iran enjoys,

"Each country has its own unique technologies, and Russia, withits wealth ofexperience inthat area, may become one ofour key partners inthe field ofnanotechnology," Beitollahi concluded.
