AEOI chief to brief MPs on JCPOA implementation next week

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) Ali Akbar Salehi is slated to attend parliament next week to brief the MPs on the implementation of the July 2015 nuclear deal with world powers (also known as JCPOA), a senior lawmaker said.

Speaking to the Tasnim News Agency on Wednesday, member of the Parliaments National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Mohammad Hassan Asafari said Salehi and his deputies are planned to participate in a meeting of the commission on Monday.

He said Salehi plans to give an explanation about the process of implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) over the past three months.

The lawmaker added that Salehi and his deputies will respond to questions of the members of the commission on the sale of Arak heavy water to the West.

A day earlier, the Iranian nuclear chief had said that Tehran will proceed with caution in the heavy water deal with Washington, citing the ruling by US High Court that almost $2 billion in frozen Iranian assets must be turned over to American families of people killed in the 1983 bombing of a US Marine Corps barracks in Beirut allegedly blamed on Iran.

The process is in progress, the heavy water was to be shipped, but after the $2 billion issue, we exercised care. We are in talks to fully make sure of the payment method, Salehi said.

Earlier on April 22, US State Department Spokeswoman Elizabeth Trudeau had said that the US plans to buy 32 tons of heavy water from Iran in the wake of a lasting nuclear deal between Tehran and world powers.

the US Government, via the Department of Energy, is making a license purchase of 32 metric tons of heavy water from a subsidiary of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran. This heavy water will fulfill a substantial portion of the US domestic demand this year for industry and domestic research applications, she said at the time.

The Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) allows Iran to sell its enriched uranium material -- called UF6 -- and to buy natural uranium or yellow cake in return.

Tehran and the Group 5+1 reached the nuclear deal on July 14, 2015 and started implementing it on January 16.

The comprehensive nuclear deal terminated all nuclear-related sanctions imposed on Iran.
