Iran, Russia in ‘constant consultations’ over Syria

Foreign Ministry spokesman says Iran is in constant touch with Russia over Syria, adding that foreign-backed militants are not abiding by the truce in the war-torn country.

“Naturally, constant consultations are underway between Iran and Russia on bilateral issues and the latest regional and international developments,” Hossein Jaberi Ansari said on Monday.

Jaberi Ansari said that during their recent round of talks, Iranian and Russian officials reviewed the latest development in Syria, including the recently US-Russia brokered ceasefire in the country.

The Iranian official said that the latest developments in Syria show that militants fighting the government are not committed to the ceasefire deal.

A truce, brokered by the US and Russia, went into effect across Syria on February 27. However, it does not apply to terrorist groups such as Daesh and al-Qaeda’s Syria branch al-Nusra Front.

“The developments that have been unfolding since the announcement of the truce…proved that there is no commitment from the armed currents and groups who are taking actions against the Syrian government,” Jaberi Ansari said.

“This is one of the basic problems in the peace process,” he said.

He further noted that terrorist groups are trying to destabilize the region and the increase in their power is in the interest of neither the region nor the world.

Jaberi Ansari expressed hope that the regional countries would develop a “common understanding” on terrorism in order to counter the ominous phenomena.

According to UN special envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura, some 400,000 people have lost their lives as a result of over five years of the foreign-sponsored conflict.

Syrian forces have managed to liberate many militant-held areas over the past few months.
