UNESCO team inspects liberated Palmyra in Syria

An international delegation of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) permanent member states is carrying out Thursday an inspection of the Site of Palmyra in Syria, a RIA Novosti correspondent reported.

On March 27, forces loyal toDamascus, supported bythe Russian Aerospace Forces, liberated the city ofPalmyra fromDaesh, 10 months afterits capture. The terrorist group, outlawed inmany countries including Russia, has destroyed a significant part ofPalmyra's historic ruins, which are a UNESCO World Heritage site.

According topreliminary estimates, some 20 percent ofancient Palmyra was destroyed, while many exhibits were looted frommuseums. It could take aroundfive years torestore the city.
