Iran attends CICA foreign ministers meeting in China

TEHRAN (Tasnim) - Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Morteza Sarmadi has participated in the fifth regular foreign ministers meeting of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia (CICA), which kicked off in Beijing, China, on Thursday morning.

The Iranian diplomat, who arrived in China earlier today, will deliver an address to the gathering.

Chinese President Xi Jinping gave a speech at the opening of the meeting, attended by representatives of 26 countries.

Xi's speech covered the Korean Peninsula nuclear issue and the developments in South China Sea, according to Xinhua.

China hosted also the fourth CICA summit in Shanghai in 2014. It holds the CICA presidency from 2014 to 2016.

The idea of convening the CICA was first proposed by Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev on October 5, 1992, at the 47th Session of the United Nations General Assembly.
