Turkey should 'urgently change foreign policy' to ensure people's safety

On Monday, the southeastern Turkish city of Kilis was shelled from Syrian territory controlled by Daesh. As result of the attack, four people, three of them children, died and 19 were injured. Abidin Uslu, who witnessed the shelling, shared his impressions with Sputnik.
Sputnik spoke withAbidin Uslu, head ofthe regional faction ofthe main oppositional Republican People's Party inthe province ofKilis, who witnessed the shelling and was ready toshare his impressions.

Commenting onthe question ofwhat could have caused the activation ofDaesh and whether the attack was related tothe recent talks inGeneva, he said:
"I can't exactly say if there is any connection, butit is clear that we urgently need tochange our foreign policy, which is unable toensure our safety."

The latest roundof the intra-Syria talks started onApril 13 inGeneva and according tothe United Nations was supposed tofocus onSyria's political transition, governance, and the constitution.

However, Uslu doesn't believe inthe successful outcome ofthe negotiations and said that they are unlikely toresolve the Syrian conflict.
"As forthe Geneva talks, it is unlikely that they would be effective intheir current form. I don't think that the negotiations withtheir current line-up can provide a solution tothe Syrian conflict," the politician stated.

According toUslu, the shelling caused panic amongresidents ofKilis. They pray fortheir lives and are afraid ofleaving their homes. The politician said that his party repeatedly appealed tothe Turkish government toreview its foreign strategy and even organized protests, butto no avail.
"Nobody listens tous, no action is taken. The bombs keep falling. No one cares aboutus and we feel doomed. So, we keep waking upevery day because ofthe bombings," Uslu concluded.

The shelling is not the first incident ofthat kind inthe Turkish city. Kilis which hosts a large number ofrefugees has repeatedly been shelled fromthe Syrian territory, killing innocent civilians living inthe area.

Earlier, Turkish officials assumed that territory might have been shelled bythe Syrian Kurds, butrepresentatives ofthe Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) denied the allegations. This year, Turkey has intensified shelling ofthe Kurds' positions inSyria, claiming that they have links tothe Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK), a group considered a terrorist organization byAnkara.
