In Loving Memory: Doctor in Tehran plants 30,000 tulips for late mother
Each year Houman Ardabili plants colorful tulips on Zarafshan Street in Tehran, in memory of his mother.

This year the plantation reached 30,000 flowers. If one simply walks nearthe northern part ofZarafshan Street, the fragrance ofbright spring flowers is clearly noticeable.

Houman, 37, works asa doctor. Many years ago, he traveled tothe US tostudy molecular medicine, butbefore finishing his degree, he returned to Iran, IRNA reported.

In addition tothe streets, Ardebili also decorates his house byplanting tulips inhis small garden and puttin pots offlowers onthe windowsills. All ofthis Houman does because ofhis great love forhis mother. Unfortunately, three years ago she passed away.

In a conversation withIRNA, Ardebili said, My mother was passionately fond offlowers. I somehow want tokeep her memory alive. At first I had a lot ofdifferent ideas, forexample, toprepare food during holidays. I never forgot her love forflowers and asI wanted todo something others would get pleasure from, I began toplant tulips.

In the first year I was able toplant 6,000 tulips, inthe second 10,000, and inthe third 30,000. Everyone liked my idea and Iranians and even foreign tourists came totake a look atmy flowers. Many came fromother cities even. For example, duringSizdahbedar, (on the 13th day ofthe Iranian calendar, known asthe day ofnature) 2,000 visitors came totake a look and there was an unusually positive atmosphere aroundhere.

It cost Ardebili $11,500 toplant the 30,000 tulips.

I paid forall these flowers frommy own pocket. I did everything frombuying the flowers, transplanting them, caring forthem and asking people tohelp me. One ofmy neighbors even offered towater my tulips.

I would, of course, like to thank the mayor of Tehran because I was allowed to put up a tent to protect the tulips from direct sunlight. If everything goes well, I would like to continue to stay engaged in this project in the future as well, Ardebili said
