Deputy FM: Syrians have right to self-determination

TEHRAN (FNA)- Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab and African Affairs Hossein Amir Abdollahian said the people of Syria should be allowed to decide their own fate.

He made the remarks in a meeting with a number of political and social scholars from the French National Center for Scientific Research in Tehran on Tuesday.

Iran's foreign policy is based on interaction with neighbors, international support for solving the Syrian crisis, and advocating regional peace and stability, he added.

Political solutions can help weaken extremism and terrorism, he said, adding that regional countries should adopt pragmatic policies to resolve disputes in such a critical phase.

Heading the French delegation, Francois Burgat, for his part, said Iran plays an effective role in the region.

He further underlined the importance of international cooperation with the Islamic Republic.

In relevant remarks, Iranian Supreme Leader's Top Adviser for International Affairs Ali Akbar Velayati underlined that no foreign state is entitled to decide for Syrias fate, and said Syrian President Bashar al-Assad is Tehrans redline.

"The US (officials) says that Bashar Assad should leave, but Assad should remain in power as Syria's legal president until the end of his presidential term and that is our redline," Velayati said in an interview with the state TV on Saturday night.

He reiterated that Bashar Assad is the Islamic Republic of Irans redline since he has been elected by the Syrian people, and the Syrian people should finally decide about their countrys fate.

He underscored that Iran will not leave Assad alone either in the battle ground or in politics, and said that no foreign country can decide about Syria's fate.

In relevant remarks in November, Velayati underlined that Tehran would continue support for the Syrian and Iraqi governments as well as the resistance fronts in Lebanon and Palestine.

Iran has succeeded in aborting the US plots in Syria, Lebanon and Iraq by increasing necessary support for the government of President Bashar al-Assad with the help of the Hezbollah of Lebanon and the Iraqi forces, Velayati said in an interview with the Lebanese daily Al-Safir.

He stressed that Tehran would never give up support for President Assad, Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi and the resistance movements in Lebanon and Palestine.

Although the current situation in the region is not acceptable, Iran is optimistic about a better future, Velayati added.

Today, Iran has become a great country with a strong military and security power that would prevent all from even daring to think of an attack against the country, he said.
