Nagorno-Karabakh army says received order to stop fire
YEREVAN (Sputnik) Armenia and Azerbaijan declared a dramatic escalation ofthe situation inthe Nagorno-Karabakh region onApril 2. Baku and Yerevan traded blame forbreaching the truce inthe conflict and reported heavy fighting inthe area.
"The Karabakh Defense Army received an order fromthe political leadership at12:00 local time tocease fire. The order is being carried out," army spokesman Senor Hasratyan told RIA Novosti.
The conflict inNagorno-Karabakh began in1988, when the Armenian-dominated autonomous region sought tosecede fromthe Azerbaijan Soviet Socialist Republic, beforeproclaiming independence afterthe Soviet Union's collapse in1991. The conflict escalated further inSeptember 2015, withthe sides blaming one another forviolating the truce.
