Iranian Gov't spokesman: No official, secret talks with S. Arabia

TEHRAN (FNA)- Government Spokesman Mohammad Baqer Nobakht dismissed media speculations that his country and Saudi Arabia have held talks after Riyadh cut relations with Tehran in January.

"We dont have any official and secret talks with Saudi Arabia," Nobakht told reporters in his weekly press conference in Tehran on Tuesday.

Noting that certain countries are trying to mediate between Iran and Saudi Arabia to resume bilateral ties, he said, "But the Islamic Republic of Iran's positions are clear."

Elsewhere, Nobakht also rejected media reports about Iranian President Hassan Rouhani's sending a secret letter to Kuwaiti Emir Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah.

In relevant remarks in February, Nobakht said Iran will not normalize ties with Saudi Arabia so long as it refuses to change aggressive policies against the regional states.

"There is no reason to hold talks with the Saudis, even though there are many pressing topics for discussion," Nobakht told reporters in Tehran.

Describing Iran's foreign policy as transparent, he added, "It is Saudi Arabia which has to change the course. Riyadh should be held to account for what it has done to the region."

Also in the same month, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Tehran and many other countries have long been urging Saudi Arabia to abandon its warmongering policies, as Riyadh has no choice but to change course.

Zarif made the remarks upon arrival in Brussels where he held a meeting with Belgian and other European officials on bilateral issues and regional developments, including the wars in Syria and Yemen and Iran's nuclear deal with the world powers.

The top diplomat said at the recent Munich conference on Syria, the participants agreed on cessation of hostilities and sending humanitarian aid to the Syrian people.

"These were the main positions of Iran in the Vienna talks too, which Saudi Arabia rejected outright. They are now under immense pressure from the world community to abandon their warmongering attitude and the illusion of getting what they want through military means," he added.

Zarif expressed confidence that Riyadh has no choice but to change course as it is now under immense international pressure, saying that he would discuss the matter with his European counterparts in Brussels.
