US to continue pushing for UNSC response on Iran missile tests

US envoy to the United Nations Samantha Power said that Washington will continue to push the UN Security Council to assess Iran's recent ballistic tests.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The United States will keep onpressing toobtain a response bythe UN Security Council onthe issue ofIrans ballistic missile tests, US envoy tothe United Nations Samantha Power told reporters followingconsultations onIran.
"We will continue topush inthe Security Council inthe [Resolution] 2231 format, bring forward the technical information that Iran itself has made public showing that the technology they used is inherently capable ofdelivering nuclear weapons and thus inherently defying Resolution 2231," Power said.


Power claimed the launches violated UN Security Council Resolution 2231, which calls onIran not toengage inlaunching ballistic missiles that can be designed tocarry and deliver nuclear warheads.

She noted that the ballistic missiles Iran recently tested Iran's recent ballistic testswere designed tobe capable ofdelivering nuclear warheads.
"This merits a [Security] Council response. The Council needs totake its responsibility and Russia seems tobe lawyering its way tolook forreasons not toact rather thanstepping upand being prepared toshoulder our collective responsibility," Power maintained.



Earlier inthe day, Russia's Ambassador tothe UN Vitaly Churkin said Tehran's missile tests did not violate UN Security Council Resolution 2231 because the resolution does not prohibit ballistic missile launches, butonly calls onIran torestrain itself fromsuch activities.

The United States had called onthe UN Security Council tomeet toaddress Irans ballistic missile activities.

Last week, Iranian state media reported the countrys Revolutionary Guard Corps carried outballistic missile launches asone ofthe last steps intesting the missiles' capabilities.
