Saudi moves against Hezbollah ‘provocative’

TEHRAN, Mar. 15 (MNA) – Iranian Deputy FM Amir Abdollahian said Mon. Saudi Arabia’s moves against Hezbollah are provocative, hasty and rash and damaging to Lebanon’s stability and peace.

The remarks were made by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab-African Affairs, Hossein Amir Abdollahian, on the sideline of his talks with Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Mekdad who arrived in Tehran on Mon. for a two-day visit to discuss the latest developments in Syria with senior Iranian officials.

Amir Abdollahian added, “Saudi Arabia’s latest move was the designation of Hezbollah as a terror group which is in fact an important and legitimate organization and has a special place in Lebanon and plays an important part in fighting the Zionist regime and terrorism in the region.”

The Iranian diplomat warned against the consequences of Riyadh’s move, saying “Hezbollah preserves the pride and dignity of Arab and Muslim world in the fight against the Zionist regime and terrorism.”

“These baseless resolutions on paper not only can affect the role, position and strength of Hezbollah in the region but it will actually give the movement even more strength and recognition,” he added.

The Arab League has labelled Hezbollah a 'terrorist group' at its foreign ministers’ meeting in Cairo on March 11, a decision that was refused by Iraq and Lebanon. The decision came after the [Persian] Gulf Cooperation Council officially added Hezbollah and all groups affiliated to its so-called list of 'terrorist' organizations on March 2. Responding to the act, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah said the reason behind it was the will of Saudi Arabia and other Persian Gulf states’ regimes to normalize relations with Israel.
