Spokesman promises at least 5pc economic growth in new Iranian year

Tehran, March 8, IRNA Many international sources and economic experts have predicted five to six percent economic growth in new Iranian year which begins on March 20, spokesman for the Government Mohammad Baqer Nobakht said Tuesday.

At a press briefing, Nobakht said such an economic growth is planned as President Hassan Rouhani has stressed importance of implementation of the JCPOA-2 (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action).

Regardless of the international predictions about Iran's economy, the Iranian government by its own planning and investment opportunities in the post-sanctions era will witness economic growth, said Nobakht.

All efforts have been made to lift sanctions on national economy, said he, adding five or six percent growth in Iran's economy is the minimum increase the country can get.

Talking on the issue of oil billionaire Babak Zanjani and announcement of his death penalty by spokesman for the Judiciary Gholam Hossein Ejei on Sunday, Nobakht said getting national rights is more important than the punishment.

'I don't think that public opinion will consider the verdict on Babak Zanjani as a severe punishment,' said he.

Oil billionaire Babak Zanjani and two other defendants were sentenced to death penalty on Sunday.

They were also sentenced to repay the money embezzled from the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC).
