Speaker: Europe should devise comprehensive formula for combating terrorism

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said terrorism has created a lot of problems for the world community and Europe has to come up with a new and comprehensive formula to battle it.

"Austria and the EU should formulate a policy that stops countries from supporting terrorist groups through their arms shipments," Larijani said Tuesday in Tehran in a meeting with Austria's Federal Minister of Agriculture, Forestry, Environment and Water Management Andr Rupprechter.

He referred to the refugee crisis in Europe, and said if terrorism doesn't end, it will create bigger problems for the world community.

Rupprechter, for his part, underscored Iran's important role in curbing the growing trend of terrorism, and said, "We know that we should expand our cooperation in this regard."

Iran has always underlined its readiness to participate in anti-terrorism campaigns across the region and the world.

In relevant remarks on Tuesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said governments should cooperate and share intelligence in the campaign against terrorism and extremism.

"Terrorism is a global pehnomenon and fighting it needs global cooperation in intelligence, culture, politics, and security," Rouhani said in a meeting with Romanian Foreign Minister Lazar Comanescu in Tehran.

Comanescu, for his part, said, "Romania and the EU consider Iran's role in the region as highly important and influential. We are willing to exchange views with Tehran on regional matters, specially in the Middle-East. Our cooperation can help ensure regional stability and prove helpful in the campaign against terrorism."

Last January, President Rouhani called for greater interaction between Tehran and Paris to fight terrorism in the region.

"We have many common stances on finding the roots of terrorism and uprooting it," President Rouhani said, addressing a joint press conference with his French counterpart Francois Hollande in Paris.

Also in a meeting with German Foreign Minster Frank-Walter Steinmeier in Tehran in February, President Rouhani said Tehran was fully prepared to step up cooperation with Berlin in the fight against terrorism.

"In addition to the ongoing efforts to enhance bilateral ties, Iran and Germany can and should work together to help resolve regional and international issues, particulalry when it comes to fighting terrorism and establishing regional peace and stability," Rouhani said.
