Lavrov, Kerry exchange views on Syrian ceasefire implementation

Russian Foreign Ministry said that Sergei Lavrov and John Kerry exchanged their views on implementation of ceasefire in Syria and confirmed importance of close military coordination.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US State Secretary John Kerry exchanged their views onimplementation ofceasefire inSyria and confirmed importance ofclose military coordination, Russian Foreign Ministry said ina statement.

On February 22, Russia and the United States reached an agreement onthe ceasefire inSyria. According tothe Moscow and Washingtons joint statement, the ceasefire was totake effect onFebruary 27 and excluded the terrorist groups Islamic State (Daesh) and the Nusra Front (both outlawed inRussia).
"The interlocutors have exchanged their estimates ofthe implementation ofthe ceasefire inSyria, confirming the importance ofclose military coordination betweenour countries asco-chairs ofthe International Syria Support Group," the statement published onthe ministry's Facebook account said Sunday.


The statement added that unconfirmed provocative information onSyria ceasefire violations must not appear inmedia.

Syria has been mired incivil war since2011, withforces loyal toPresident Bashar Assad fighting againsta number ofopposition factions and extremist groups. The international community, including Russia and the United States, has been making efforts tosettle the crisis.

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution endorsing the Russia-US agreement onthe cessation ofhostilities inSyria onFriday, shortly beforethe ceasefire came intoforce.
