Canada stops airstrikes against Daesh

Canada has ended airstrikes against Daesh radicals in Iraq and Syria, conducted as part of international US-led coalition efforts.





MOSCOW (Sputnik) Last week, Canada announced that it would conclude airstrikes againstDaesh inthe next two weeks, butwould continue supporting the US-ledcoalitionbyproviding aircraft forrefueling and surveillance purposes.


"In accordance withGovernment ofCanada direction, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) ceased airstrike operations inIraq and Syria on15 February 2016," the Canadian Armed Forces said ina statement.


According tothe statement onthe Canadian government website, Canadas planes conducted over250 airstrikes inIraq and Syria combined starting fromOctober 2014.
"The six CF-188 Hornets, alongwith associated aircrew and support personnel, will depart the region ina phased approach inthe coming weeks. The CC-150 Polaris and CP-140 Aurora aircraft will continue toconduct air-to-air refueling and aerial intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance missions insupport ofcoalition air operations," the statement says.


Canada has been conducting airstrikes again the Daesh inSyria and Iraq incoordination withthe US-led coalition since2014.

A US-led international coalition has been launching airstrikes againstDaesh targets inSyria and Iraq sinceSeptember 2014, withoutthe permission ofDamascus or the United Nations. Russia started carrying outprecision airstrikes againstDaesh inSyria inSeptember 2015, atthe request ofSyrian President Bashar Assad.
