Bad idea? Merkel's 'reckless' game with Turkey may backfire on EU

When it comes to dealing with Turkey and trying to solve the ongoing refugee crisis in Europe, German Chancellor Angela Merkel shouldnt talk to Turkey on behalf of the entire European Union (EU), French political analyst Didier Billion told Atlantico.

By negotiating withTurkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the issue ofrefugees, Merkel is simply pushing her own interests, not the interests ofthe EU asa whole.
"There is no equality betweenGerman interests and European interests," Billion, who is the co-head ofthe French Institute forInternational and Strategic Affairs (IRIS), told Atlantico.

Since no EU counsellors have given Merkel a mandate todiscuss the issue ofrefugees withErdogan and Merkel's claims torepresent the EU were made withouta collective decision they're illegitimate, the French political analyst explained.

According toBillion, Merkel's selfish action shows a "sign that the European project no longer exists."

Meanwhile forErdogan, the EU's disunity is beneficial, ashe can negotiate a better deal forhimself using the refugees asa diplomatic tool. Despite this, whether the EU likes it or not, Turkey will continue toplay a central role inthe refugee crisis, the Frenchman argued.

If the EU fails tofind a working deal withTurkey, Europe will face an increasing wave ofuncontrollable refugees. According toBillion, withoutan agreement withTurkey the number ofrefugees inEurope would increase manifold.

Nevertheless, an agreement withTurkey should be found withthe participation ofall 28 EU member states and not based onMerkel's personal interests, Billion said.
Merkel's personal attempt toact asthe EU's representative has been "reckless" and she will end uppaying a stiff price forthis inthe future. Many Europeans are unhappy withher policies and have already dubbed her sarcastically as "Mama Merkel," the IRIS expert said.

The German Chancellor has already provoked widespread public anger aftercalling onall EU member states toparticipate ina mandatory relocation scheme, according towhich refugees would be relocated acrossthe entire EU.
