US treasury under secretary to address Daesh financing with Turkey, France

The US Department of the Treasury announced that acting US Treasury Undersecretary for Terrorism and Financial Intelligence Adam Szubin will visit Turkey and France next week in an effort to block financing for Daesh terrorist group.





WASHINGTON (Sputnik) Acting US Treasury Undersecretary forTerrorism and Financial Intelligence Adam Szubin will visit Turkey and France next week inan effort toblock financing forDaesh terrorist group, the US Department ofthe Treasury announced ina press release.
"Discussions will focus oncombating ISIL [Daesh] financing, aswell asbroader illicit finance and security issues ofmutual concern," the release stated onWednesday.


NATO member Turkey has been severely criticized foraccepting oil fromDaesh and selling it atdiscounted prices, providing a major source offinancing forthe terrorist group.


The Islamic State, also known asDaesh, is a designated terrorist group outlawed inthe United States and Russia aswell asin numerous other countries. The group has acquired vast areas ofland inSyria and Iraq and proclaimed a caliphate there ruled understrict interpretation ofthe Islamic Sharia law.

US relations withIran are also onthe agenda, asthe United States prepares tohonour its commitment towaive nuclear-related sanctions aspart ofthe nuclear agreement concluded withTehran last July, according tothe release. The package ofsanctions relief includes the release ofup to $150 billion inIranian assets frozen followingthe 1979 Islamic revolution.

The visits will take place February 1-4.
