France, Germany cannot solve refugee crisis alone – Italian PM

Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi called on the international community to increase financial support to the UN refugee agency, as well as cooperate with conflict-torn countries, such as Lebanon, Jordan, Somalia and Ethiopia.

BERLIN (Sputnik) — German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Francois Hollande cannot solve a massive refugee crisis in the European Union by taking decisions for all members in the bloc, Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi said Thursday.

“If we’re looking for a joint European strategy to solve the refugee question, it can’t be sufficient for Angela to first call Hollande and then EU Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, and that I learn of the result in the press,” Renzi told the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung newspaper ahead of his Friday meeting with the German chancellor in Berlin.

The Italian high-ranking official also called on the international community to increase financial support to the UN refugee agency, as well as cooperate with conflict-torn countries, such as Lebanon, Jordan, Somalia and Ethiopia.

Europe is currently struggling to cope with a massive refugee influx, with millions of refugees fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and North Africa in search of asylum in stable and wealthy EU states.
