Saudi Arabia buys 'international silence' about its atrocities in Yemen

Since March 2015, a Saudi-led coalition has been bombing Yemen after Houthi rebels toppled its government. According to political analyst Catherine Shakdam, the international community turns a blind eye on Riyadh's war crimes in Yemen.

At least 20 people, including rescue workers and an ambulance driver, were killed recently ina series ofairstrikes Saudi Arabia carried outon one target inthe Yemeni province ofSaada.

The "Medecins Sans Frontieres" (Doctors Without Borders) humanitarian-aid organization said a driver ofone ofits hospitals was killed.

This is not the first time the Saudi-led coalition has carried outa series ofairstrikesagainstone target. The sports events center inthe capital Sanaa was destroyed inseven bombardments. The operation was carried outto support the Yemeni government-in-exile inits fight againstHouthi rebels.

Coalition representative Ahmad Assiri said the kingdom is not responsible forvictims ofthe war.

We regret any civilians killed and wounded inYemen. But we should not forget that Houthi rebels and the coup they staged plunged the country intochaos," he was quoted assaying byRT.

Catherine Shakdam is a political analyst, writer and commentator forthe Middle East, did not agree withthis.

The Saudi campaign againstYemen, one ofthe worlds poorest nations, has been underway forover 10 months, and its results are unclear.

The Saudis have succeeded if their goal was tokill asmany Yemeni people aspossible or if they wanted genocide inthe country. At the same time, the international community has not even lifted a finger overthe situation, Shakdam said.

She explained why the international community has not commented onSaudi airstrikes inYemen.
"This is all aboutmoney. Saudi Arabia is very rich and can control mass media. The kingdom also can bribe its political allies," she said.

It is unbelievable that it has been 10 months sincethe airstrikes started and no efforts has been made tosettle the conflict, Fadl al-Mutaa, a member ofthe Yemeni party Ansar Allah, toldSputnik Arabic.
"They have been attacking Yemen withtheirdeadly weaponsforover 10 months. They are bombing everything, fromschools and hospitals toairports and water storages, and even mosques. They are killing women and children. And the international community is doing nothing," he said.

"We can only rely onRussia and its president, China and Iran that proved the efficiency oftheir actions," he added.

According tohim, many foreign fighters, including fromthe US,Britainand France, have been captured inYemen and then released inexchange forfood and medicine supplies tothe conflict zone.

He also said that the Yemeni government respect Russias stance towardthe issue and wants tohave good relations withMoscow.
