US-Iranian 'prisoner swap' one-sided, no Iranians aboard Geneva-bound plane

Iranian prisoners freed from the United States remained in the US without boarding a plane bound for Switzerland where an exchange was to take place, national media cited officials familiar with the negotiations surrounding their release.








MOSCOW (Sputnik) None ofthe seven Iranians freed fromUS custody overthe weekend chose toreturn toIran when given the choice, the ABC News broadcaster cited the officials withknowledge ofthe talks onTuesday.

Iran released four US nationals inexchange, including a Washington Post journalist, a former Marine and a Christian pastor, all ofwhom have dual US-Iranian citizenship.

Three boarded the plane bound forGeneva, one decided tostay inIran forunknown reasons.

The plane had nonetheless departed from "somewhere onthe East Coast ofthe United States" because it was designated tobring the US nationals released byIran toGermany.

The seven Iranians, six ofwhom have dual citizenship, were convicted ofviolating US sanctions onthe sale ofsensitive equipment and technology toIran.

The Implementation Day ofthe Joint Comprehensive Plan ofAction (JCPOA) announced last weekend marked an end tothe years-long sanctions regime, opening Tehran tobillions infrozen assets and restored trade.
