Second time’s the charm? Hillary Clinton wants new sanctions against Iran

Shortly after the US president signed an order lifting anti-Iran sanctions, the leading Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton stepped up with the idea of imposing a new portion of sanctions on Tehran.

Clinton called for new sanctions against the Islamic Republic in a statement on the nuclear agreement published Saturday. On the one hand, she commended the move by the US to lift sanctions, calling it an “important achievement of diplomacy.” On the other, she stressed that there are concerns over Tehran’s activities that shouldn’t be overlooked.
“Iran is still violating UN Security Council resolutions with its ballistic missile program, which should be met with new sanctions designations and firm resolve,” Clinton declared.

She also slammed at Iranian authorities for detainment of American nationals.
“These prisoners were held unjustly by a regime that continues to threaten the peace and security of the Middle East,” Clinton said, adding that two US citizens are still in Iranian custody.

The former secretary of state pointed out Washington shouldn’t “thank” Teheran for freeing US Naval members briefly derained for illegally crossing into Iran’s territorial earlier this week.

“The treatment of our Navy sailors earlier this week was offensive, including the release of demeaning and provocative videos.”
She concluded by saying that if elected, she would adhere to the policy of “distrust and verify” towards Iran.

The US raised sanctions after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) officially confirmed Iran implemented its commitments made in the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), and ruled to remove all economic sanctions against the nation.

The JCPOA text was finalized on July 14, 2015 by Iran and the P5+1 group including the US, France, Britain, Russia, China and Germany.
