Tehran has not broken diplomatic relations with Saudi Arabia, Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a letter.
MOSCOW (Sputnik) On December 4, Saudi Arabia formally severed diplomatic ties withIran followingSaturday attacks onthe Saudi Embassy inTehran and the Consulate inthe city ofMashhad. The attacks were triggered bythe execution ofprominent Shia cleric Nimr al-Nimr, alongwith 46 other people byRiyadh.
"The Islamic Republic ofIran, confident ofthe strength ofits cause, conviction and people, refused toretaliate or break or even reduce diplomatic relations withSaudi Arabia," the letter read.
The crown prince, who also acts asSaudi Arabia's defense minister, rejected claims ofthe arbitrary nature ofNimr's execution, blaming the post-execution escalation onIran, while expressing hope that the Islamic republic does not become Saudi Arabia's main enemy.
