Persian Gulf states may take new steps against Iran

According to the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf, Arab states of the Persian Gulf will take additional measures against Iran.
CAIRO (Sputnik) The Arab states ofthe Persian Gulf will take additional measures againstIran incase ofnew "hostile" moves bythe Islamic Republic, the Cooperation Council forthe Arab States ofthe Gulf (GCC) said ina statement Saturday followingan extraordinary meeting offoreign ministers.

"Member states ofthe GCC will take appropriate additional measures tocounter these hostile actions," the organization's Secretary General Abdullatif Zayani said, reading the statement.

Last weekend, protesters stormed the Saudi Arabian embassy inIran afterRiyadh executed top Iranian Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr, alongwith dozens ofother people convicted ofterrorism. Al-Nimr had demanded more rights forShias, who are a minority inSaudi Arabia, where most citizens are Sunni Muslims.

Shortly afterthe unrest, a diplomatic row erupted inthe Middle East, withSaudi Arabia severing diplomatic ties withthe regions main Shia power, Iran. Bahrain followed inRiyadh's footsteps, together withSudan and Djibouti. The United Arab Emirates also scaled downits diplomatic representation inIran and Kuwait recalled their ambassadors toTehran.
