Obama vows not to campaign for opponents of gun reform

US President Barack Obama says he will not campaign for Democrats who don't back gun reform.

I will not campaign for, vote for or support any candidate, even in my own party, who does not support common-sense gun reform, Obama wrote in an op-ed column in the New York Times on Thursday.

All of us need to demand leaders brave enough to stand up to the gun lobby's lies, he added. All of us need to demand that governors, mayors and our representatives in Congress do their part."

Obama made a passionate plea Tuesday about the urgency to fight gun violence in America, blasting Congress for inaction in the face of too many tragic deaths by firearms.

Obamas proposals call for expanding background checks on gun buyers, hiring more FBI agents to process background checks for gun sales, and requiring gun dealers to notify federal authorities if their guns are lost in transit.

The actions aim to close the so-called gun show loophole, which allows small dealers to sell firearms at gun shows or online without keeping official sales records.

Hillary Clinton, the Democratic presidential front-runner, earlier this week praised Obama's gun action. Clinton has also argued that her Dem primary rival Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) isn't tough enough on guns.

Obama's message to candidates comes just weeks before ballots are cast in the early voting states of Iowa and New Hampshire, where Clinton and Sanders are battling.

According to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), firearms are the cause of death for more than 33,000 people in the United States every year, a number that includes accidental discharge, murder and suicides.
