Saudis seek to increase oil prices 'by fuelling conflicts in Middle East

Oil prices did not significantly rise on Monday despite the Saudis' expectations related to the new tensions in the Middle East. One of the reasons for low oil prices is global oil overproduction, German newspaper Deutsche Wirtschafts Nachrichten reported.

The negative trend could urge Saudi Arabia or other petroleum producers tofurther escalate the situation inthe Middle East. The first signs can already be seen inLibya, Yemen and inthe rapidly deteriorating relations betweenSaudi Arabia and Iran.

On Monday, the oil market witnessed a significant price fluctuation. Saudis expected that the tensions inthe Middle East would lead tosupply shortages and tothe followingrise ofoil prices, butmiscalculated the situation.

Because ofworldwide overproduction, the price forcrude oil has fallen overthe pastyear and a half byabout two-thirds compared to2014. According tothe newspaper, the global oversupply ofcrude oil is one ofthe main reasons forthe decreasing oil prices.

DWN argued that low oil prices may put Saudi Arabia onthe brink ofnational bankruptcy. If the situation does not change, the Saudi system would face a serious threat.
In this case, the only chance forthe Saudis would be the escalation ofthe situation inthe Middle East. For instance, the Saudis may escalate the fighting inYemen betweenSaudis and Houthis who are supported byIran.

At the same time, the newspaper argued, Tehran is ina relatively favorable position. Because ofthe lifting ofsanctions, Iran will reenter the oil business and contribute tofurther decrease inprices.

The escalation ofthe situation inthe Middle East will not only affect the whole region, butalso have a negative impact onEuropean countries. The armed clashes will lead tothe increased outflow ofrefugees and worsen the migration crisis inEurope, DWN concluded.
