Iran among four top countries in stem cell transplantation

Tehran, January 6, The Iran Project The head of Iran's Bone Marrow Transplantation Center says Iran is ranked among four top countries in the world due to the number of its performed transplants.

Dr. Ardeshir Ghavamzadeh, the head of Iran's Bone Marrow Transplantation Center made the remarks during the third international congress on blood making stem cells on Wednesday.

He noted Iran's high position in the world, saying that currently the Bone Marrow Transplantation Center at Shariati hospital in Tehran is one of the four leading centers of transplantation due to the number of its performed transplants and number of beds.

"Some 400 surgery operations are annually being undertaken in this center which has placed Iran among the four top countries in stem cell transplantation," he stated, highlighting the numerous benefits of performing such surgery operations within the country for Iran's economy.

Referring to the existing 7000 blood samples in the blood's bank, he underlined the efforts to export the samples particularly after removing the sanctions.

Elsewhere in his remarks he pointed out the 50 transplantation beds for some 66 types of refractory diseases in this center.

It is also worth noting that Shariati Hospital's bone marrow transplant center located in Tehran is the first such-center established in Iran which has now become one of the leading BMT centers of the Middle East.
