US said to be preparing new sanctions against Iran

Despite renewed hopes for reconciliation between Washington and Tehran following the Iran nuclear deal, the Obama administration is reportedly preparing new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

In July, negotiations betweenIran and the P5+1 nations, including France, Russia, the United States, the United Kingdom, China, and Germany, led toa historic deal. Under the terms ofthe deal, afterproviding assurances that it was not enriching uranium topursue a nuclear weapon, international sanctions againstIran would be gradually lifted.

But onWednesday, US officials, speaking oncondition ofanonymity, revealed that the US Treasury Department is prepared toroll outnew sanctions againstcompanies and individuals not only inIran, butalso inHong Kong and the United Arab Emirates, according tothe Wall Street Journal.

The penalties are reportedly related toTehrans test-firing oftwo ballistic missiles, one inOctober and another inNovember. Washington views the launches asa violation ofinternational law, though Tehran maintains that the tests were conducted inaccording withUN regulations, and the missiles are defensive only.
If approved, the sanctions would apply tofive government officials working inIrans Ministry ofDefense forArmed Forces Logistics.

The Obama administration is also targeting Mabrooka Trading Co. LLC, a UAE-based entity, aswell asits founder, Hossein Pournaghshband, forits alleged role inaiding Irans ballistic missile program. Penalties would also apply toAnhui Land Group Co, a Hong Kong-based subsidiary said tobe used byPournaghshband toproduce carbon-fiber material forthe missile program.

The sanctions would place these entities ona business blacklist, and would freeze their assets inUS banks.

US officials stress that new sanctions are unrelated tothe nuclear accord, butIranian officials have warned inrecent months that new financial penalties would be seen byAyatollah Ali Khamenei asa breach ofthe agreement.

Tehran recently accused the United States ofviolating the nuclear accord overlegislation passed bythe US Congress. New laws passed afterthe San Bernardino shooting require any foreign national who has visited Iran or Syria toobtain a visa beforeentering the US. Tehran claims this move could harm Iranian business, and cut offaccess toforeign investment.

The Treasury Departments decision comes asthe Obama administration prepares tolift sanctions related toTehrans nuclear program. The lifting ofthose penalties was set tobegin next month, followingIrans shipment of25,000 pounds ofuranium toRussia, a sign that the government was abiding bythe accord.
