Iran produces new-generation Nano solar cells

Researchers at Amir Kabir University of Technology have developed quantum dot solar cells, setting the stage for the industrial production of such cells in the country.

Mahsa Amiri, the lead researcher, said that different generations of solar cells which are used as a tool to change solar energy into electrical power have been produced, the latest of which has been built using nanoparticles. She further said that quantum dots are semiconductor nanocrystals with particle dimensions in the range of 210 nm [exhibiting both photo- and electroluminescence properties].Quantum dots, which glow a specific color when they are hit with any kind of light, can be used as light absorbers in solar cells. They are tiny particles or nanocrystals of a semiconducting material with diameters in the range of 2-10 nanometers (10-50 atoms).
