AEOI Chief: PMD case closed for ever

Tehran, Dec 19, IRNA Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (AEOI) announced that that the case of the issues related to Iran's past nuclear activities have been closed and PMD is no longer an issue for discussion.

'The dossier under the tiles of PMD on Iran is no longer a subject and it has been closed,' Ali Akbar Salehi said in an interview with state TV on Saturday.

He underlined that Iran's nuclear activities are under consideration within the framework of peaceful program of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

On Friday, Salehi called on the western countries to accelerate fulfillment of their undertakings under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) after closure of the case with Iran's past nuclear activities, known as the PMD.

'We are making efforts to do our part in such a way that the JCPOA will be implemented within two weeks, and the western countries should do the same,' Salehi said in a telephone conversation with Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Yukiya Amano.

His remarks came after the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) closed the case with probe into the PMD case after a consensus vote by its Board of Governors on Tuesday.

He also called on the IAEA to have necessary cooperation in the field.

Amano, for his part, congratulated approval of resolution by Board of Governors to close file of the Possible Military Dimensions (PMD), and said, 'A new atmosphere had been emerged following the IAEA's Board of Governors' approval.

On Wednesday, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani stressed that the PMD closure proved the country's repeated emphasis on the peaceful nature of its nuclear program, expressing the hope that the world powers would remain committed to their undertakings and lift sanctions against Tehran soon.

Iran's nuclear program has never diverted from its peaceful path, President Rouhani said, speaking in a live TV program in Tehran.

Iran has repeatedly stressed its religious commitment to non-proliferation, he added.

Settlement of nuclear issue came after Iran's diplomatic engagement, the President said, adding that the grounds are almost paved for implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached between Iran and the six world powers on July 14.

Rouhani expressed the hope that sanctions against Iran would be lifted as soon as the next month.

He also underlined that the Islamic Republic of Iran will adhere to all its commitments under the terms of the JCPOA.

The IAEA Board of Governors voted in favor of a draft resolution proposed by the six world powers to declare end to investigations into Iran's nuclear activities in the past.
