Iran says ready to join WTO

Iran said on Wednesday that it is ready to join the World Trade Organization (WTO) and called on countries to help its efforts to that connection.

Iran's Minister of Industry, Mines and Trade Mohammad Reza Nematzadeh has emphasized that the conditions created after the lifting of the US-engineered sanctions against Iran would make it necessary to expedite efforts to join the WTO.

Nematzadeh made the remarks in a meeting with the Finnish Minister for Foreign Trade and Development Lenita Toivakka on the sidelines of WTOs Tenth Ministerial Conference in Nairobi, IRNA reported.

He said the implementation of the Iran nuclear deal and the subsequent lifting of the sanctions would lead to positive outcomes for Iran, suggesting that Tehran is already planning to exploit the opportunities that would be thus created.

Nematzadeh further urged all WTO members including Finland to support Iran's membership in the international body.

Iran is ready to start talks with the WTO over joining the Organization, the trade minister noted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Nematzadeh said that Iran is ready to cooperate with Finland in fields of economy, industry and new energies.

He said that Iran is keen to boost cooperation with the European Union and voiced hope that after removal of sanctions in the near future, Iran can promote ties with the world.

WTO members were urged at the opening session of the WTOs Tenth Ministerial Conference in Nairobi on 15 December to crown a successful year of multilateral diplomacy by delivering on a package of trade deals that would benefit the worlds poorest and spur global economic growth, IRNAs report added.
