Negotiator rejects Amanos claim on military studies in Iran's nuclear program

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi said the Islamic Republic does not accept the claims raised in a recent report by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano on military studies in Tehrans nuclear program.

Although the IAEA report may not have been able to present a definitive assessment of past and present outstanding issues regarding Irans nuclear program, but it is completely clear, Araqchi told IRNA on Sunday night.

The senior diplomat, who is also the head of Irans taskforce to pursue the implementation of a recent nuclear deal with six world powers (also known as JCPOA), added Amanos report claims that activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device did not advance beyond feasibility and scientific studies, but Iran does not agree even such claim on studies.

He further pointed to his meeting with Deputy Secretary General of the European External Action Service Helga Schmid on Sunday evening, and said that the upcoming resolution of the IAEA Board of Governors was the main issue discussed in the meeting.

The report on the so-called PMD (possible military dimensions) in Irans nuclear program, which was released on Wednesday by Amano, confirmed that the agency has no credible indications of suspicious work in Tehrans nuclear activities.

However, the report said, The Agencys overall assessment is that a range of activities relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device were conducted in Iran prior to the end of 2003 as a coordinated effort, and some activities took place after 2003. The Agency also assesses that these activities did not advance beyond feasibility and scientific studies, and the acquisition of certain relevant technical competences and capabilities. The Agency has no credible indications of activities in Iran relevant to the development of a nuclear explosive device after 2009.

The document will be the basis of one final report by the IAEA Board of Governors that is expected to close the case on the so-called PMD in Irans nuclear program once and for all.

As part of a Road-map signed between Iran and the IAEA in July, the agency is required to finish its investigations about Irans nuclear activities and submit a report to the Board of Governors by December 15.

The Road-map was signed on the same day that Tehran and the Group 5+1 (Russia, China, the US, Britain, France and Germany) reached a conclusion on a lasting nuclear agreement, known as the JCPOA.

The IAEA has been given the role of verifying Irans commitments under the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

The agreement was officially adopted on October 18, and is going to take effect within the next few weeks.
