UN chief condemns Arab coalition airstrikes on MSF facilities in Yemen

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon condemned recent airstrikes by the Saudi-led military coalition against the medical and humanitarian facilities operated by Medecins sans Frontieres (Doctors Without Borders, or MSF) in Yemen.
UNITED NATIONS (Sputnik) On Wednesday, atleast seven people were wounded inSaudi-led attack ona non-combatant MSF facility inthe southwestern Yemeni city ofTaiz.

"The Secretary-General condemns the airstrikes today bythe Saudi-led Coalition ona mobile health clinic run byMdecins Sans Frontires (MSF) inTaiz city, Yemen He had condemned an earlier incident on27 October duringwhich a hospital run byMSF inSaada province was hit byairstrikes," the United Nations said ina statement Wednesday.

He pointed outthat medical facilities and personnel are not military combatants and are underthe protection ofinternational and humanitarian law.

Yemen has been engulfed ina military conflict betweenthe government and the Houthi opposition faction forover a year.

Since March, a Saudi-led coalition has been carrying outairstrikes againstHouthi positions atthe request ofYemens President Abd Rabbuh Mansur Hadi.

In October, an MSF hospital inthe capital Saada was bombed while staff and patients were insidethe building. The MSF believes the coalition was responsible forthe incident, and the coalition forces have denied the accusations.
