Ayatollah Sistani sends message to Saudi Arabia over cleric

Grand Ayatollah Ali Sistani, a prominent Shiite cleric based in Iraq, has sent a message to Saudi officials urging them to stop the execution of political prisoners and release Sheikh Nimr Baqr al-Nimr and other political prisoners, according to Muhammad al-Nimr, the brother of the Saudi cleric who has been sentenced to death.
Muhammad al-Nimr wrote on his Twitter page that the Iraqi cleric sent the message to Saudi officials less than three weeks ago.
Meanwhile, an Iraqi Sunni mufti announced that Saudi King Salman bin Abdulaziz has accepted to stay al-Nimr’s death sentence thanks to Ayatollah Sistani’s mediation.
