Iran to set up fact-finding mission to probe into Mina tragedy: VP

TEHRAN (Tasnim) Irans vice-president for legal affairs announced that a fact-finding mission will be established in the near future to investigate a recent crush of people in Saudi Arabia that killed thousands of pilgrims.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Elham Aminzadeh pointed to the deadly crush in Mina, near Mecca, back in September, saying that the incident has various dimensions.

To examine different dimensions of the Mina incident, a fact-finding mission will be formed soon, she noted.

The vice-president further said that with the cooperation of the Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization and the Foreign Ministry, necessary coordination has been made to investigate the incident to prevent a recurrence of such crises.

At least 7,500 pilgrims were killed in the crush in Mina on September 24 when performing religious rites.

The Iranian Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization has put the final number of Iranian pilgrims killed in the disaster at 464.

The incident came nearly two weeks after tens of Hajj pilgrims were killed in another tragic incident in Mecca.

On September 11, a massive construction crane crashed into Meccas Grand Mosque in stormy weather, killing at least 107 people, including 11 Iranians, and injuring 201 others.

Saudi authorities have come under fire for their inability to ensure the safety of hundreds of thousands of pilgrims who converge on Mecca every year.
