Iran poised to lead global gas market: Official

TEHRAN, Nov. 16 (Shana) Iran will become a key player in the global gas trade in the near future given its vast gas reserves, says Iranian deputy petroleum minister for international affairs and trading.

"Iran will presently be manifest as the chief player in the global gas trade," Amir Hussein Zamani-nia told Shana.
Iran holds 33 trillion cubic meters of natural gas in its reserves which promises a leading role for the country in the near future that no one can deny, he said.

Speaking of environmental concerns in the world, gas can be a clean substitute for other fossil fuels, he said, adding, "Gas will be the future's chosen fuel given its cleanness; more than 50bn mcm of gas is being supplied to power plants instead of liquid fuel in Iran which is a major help to preserving the environment and preventing air pollution."

Iran's gas reserves have not been tapped as they should, however, the county's output puts the country among the world's biggest natural gas producers, he added.

"Efforts must be made to balance consumption and development of gas fields in Iran so the country will gain a toehold in global gas markets," he added, highlighting the high rate of gas consumption in Iran.

Iran has plans to bring its gas output to 1.3 bcm by the end of the 6th five-year development plan (2016-2021) which will place Iran on top of the gas exporting countries, the official added.
