Iran Carbon cuts hinged on sanctions removal

TEHRAN Nov. 08 (Shana) Iran says it will need to see sanctions on its economy removed if it is to join hands with other countries to curb greenhouse emissions.
Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Zangeneh joined a number of top environmental and economic officials of the country Saturday to discuss dimensions of the submission of intended nationally determined contributions (INDCs) of Iran to the UN.
So far, 156 countries have submitted their INDCs to global communities. This is a "highly significant move" towards curbing global warming, said head of Department Of Environment (DOE) Masoumeh Ebtekar, during the meeting.

"Iran will presently prepare its INDCs and will present it to international communities once it receives the cabinet approval for the document," she added.
Irans emissions account for about 1.8 percent of the global total, the DOE chief said, adding that Iran's cooperation with other countries to stop global warming is in line with the Rouhani Administration's targets and will be very beneficial for the country.

"Iran's INDCs must be held to the promise of removal of unjust sanctions against the country, transfer of the state-of-the-art technologies and global collaboration with Iran," said Zangeneh during the meeting.
He said international initiatives aimed at reducing Iran's greenhouse emissions must be aligned with Iran's domestic capacities.

Irans actions to fight climate change matter because Tehran is a big greenhouse gas polluter that has yet to detail the efforts it is prepared to make as part of a new deal on global warming.
Envoys from more than 190 nations met in Bonn in October to prepare for the deal that is expected to be signed at a summit in Paris in December.
