Pres. Rouhani: US embassy takeover marks Iran political independence

Tehran, Nov 3, IRNA President Hassan Rouhani underlined that the anniversary of the US embassy takeover in November 1979 marks the beginning of a new era of important political developments and political independence in Iran.

'The US embassy takeover formed the pillars of the country's independence and fighting against the arrogant power by the Islamic Revolution in Iran,' President Rouhani said on Tuesday, addressing a meeting of the Cultural Revolution Supreme Council.

The Iranian president reiterated that the high school and university students have played a determining role in the political developments and safeguarding the Islamic Revolution's achievements, specially the Sacred Defense.

President Rouhani said that takeover of the US Embassy as ordered by late Imam Khomeini is regarded as the second revolution.

Since the 1979 takeover of the US embassy in Tehran, Iranians have been celebrating the occasion every year by holding rallies on the anniversary and marking it as the National Day against the 'Global Arrogance'.

November 4 marks three important events in Iranian history: the takeover of the former US embassy in Tehran by Muslim students following the Imam's line in 1979 and the exile of Imam Khomeini by the Shah in 1964. It also marks the massacre of a large number of Iranian school students by the army of the former Pahlavi regime during the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Iranian university students took over the US embassy building to thwart what they called Washington's plots against the Islamic Revolution.

Inside the embassy, the students found shredded documents which proved their convictions.
