US acts to reduce medical sanctions against Iran

The US Department of the Treasury announced that the United States has eased up on sanctions against Iran to permit a broad list of medical supplies to be exported or re-exported there.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) The United States has eased upon sanctions againstIran topermit a broad list ofmedical supplies tobe exported or re-exported there, the US Department ofthe Treasury announced ina statement.

The Department ofthe Treasury's Office ofForeign Assets Control (OFAC) is updating the List ofMedical Supplies eligible forexportation or re-exportation toIran underthe general license ofthe Iranian Transactions and Sanctions Regulations (ITSR) toinclude additional items, the statement said onMonday.

The move is a modification ofthe ITSR withinthe general license originally issued onOctober 22, 2012 forthe export ofbasic medical supplies toIran, it explained.

The move comes three days afterRepublican members ofCongress urged President Barack Obama onFriday toimpose additional economic sanctions onIrans Revolutionary Guard Corps followingthe arrest ofIranian-American oil executive Siamak Namazi.

On Thursday and Friday, Secretary ofState John Kerry met withIranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif inVienna todiscuss the nuclear agreement reached inmid-July aswell asthe Syria conflict amidgrowing predictions that Washington will agree toTeherans full participation inthe Syrian peace process.
