Deputy Minister of Medical Education Dr. Bagher Larijani met on Monday with Dr. Yasuhiro Yamamoto, Chairman of Japan-Middle East Medical Association (JMEMA), who is visiting Tehran.
Non-Profit Organization Japan Middle East Medical Association (JMEMA) was originally established in January 1986, after a contract of Japan building hospitals in Iraq, but in 2014 the association expanded its field of activities from Iraq to the wider Middle East countries
During the meeting the Iranian official briefed Dr. Yasuhiro Yamamoto on the developments of medical education in the Islamic Republic of Iran.
"Iran has gone through breakthrough advances in medical education over the past years so that currently 19,000 are studying to become MDs and in overall there are 190,000 students in all medicine-related fields studying in 60 medical universities across the country," recounted Larijani.
The Iranian official also boasted the plans to develop medical education in Iran as the country enjoys more than 18,000 professors in boards of faculties of its medical universities.
"There are currently 9,000 medicine students in over 80 universities in Japan," said Yasuhiro Yamamoto for his part in the meeting and voiced hope that a joint medical committee would facilitate development of educational cooperation between Iran and Japan.
The Japanese Professor Yasuhiro Yamamoto is a medical doctor, advisor to the Japanese minister of health, labor and welfare and ambassador for African continent and emergency medicine for the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs and was formerly Director General of Middle Eastern and African Affairs Bureau of Japanese Foreign Ministry.
