TEHRAN, Oct. 27 (MNA) – Iran’s UN deputy envoy Dehghani while stressing the need for reform in UN structure, called on the Security Council to stop interfering in areas beyond its responsibilities.
Ambassador and Deputy Permanent Representative of Iran to the United Nations Gholamhossein Dehghani in the Monday meeting of UN Sixth Committee in New York defined the position and views of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in regard to the need to strengthen the fundamental principles of the UN Charter and the promotion of multilateralism in the international organization.
Dehghani while highlighting the significant role of the General Assembly as a policy-making pillar of the UN, criticized the involvement of the Security Council in issues related to the Assembly and the Economic and Social Council.
The Iranian envoy further stressed the need for certain reforms in the framework of the UN principles and Charter, calling on the UN to legally review the legal nature of the implementation of Chapter IV of the Charter in regard to the functions of the various branches of this organization.
Dehghani also criticized the Security Council sanctions against countries, saying the imposition of sanctions is legal only when there is a threat against international peace and security or a major crime has been committed; “it is imperative that the goal of international sanctions regime be clearly defined and the sanctions be utilized as the last resort and lifted immediately after the issues are resolved,” he said.
Dehghani further leveled criticism against the nonconstructive approach of some countries toward the proposals of NAM in regard to the important issues of the UN Charter, calling on the UN Special Committee to review these proposals more accurately in line with promoting the democratic performance of the United Nation.
