Berlin, Oct 22, IRNA -- German Foreign Minster Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Thursday reiterated the crucial role of Tehran and Riyadh when it comes to resolving the Syrian civil war, according to IRNA.

Talking at a joint news conference with his American counterpart John Kerry in Berlin, Steinmeier said both sides -- Iran and Saudi Arabia --- were needed to help de-escalate the Syrian conflict.

Pointing to his recent trip to Tehran and Riyadh, the German minister acknowledged though deep differences remain between both sides on the issue.

Even though it will be very difficult to overcome the differences, we must not give up, he insisted.

Steinmeier called for a political settlement of the Syrian conflict had to include not only the US and Russia but also 'a constructive' role by regional powers.
